Statement of Purpose
The New School of Drama is dedicated to the belief that acting is a
challenging and worthy profession.
Acting that moves audiences to excitement and admiration is not achieved without effort. Really good acting is performed by a finely-tuned instrument, the actor's body and imagination, striving together to produce moment by moment spontaneity out of given circumstances. It is full of risk and danger. Fiction becomes real. Emotions just as true as those of life but more fully expressed fly between richly coloured characters in pursuit of their desires. When the actor performs honestly and deeply we see more clearly into the life of the human spirit.
To achieve this level of skill takes courage and commitment. The actor's ongoing pursuit of excellence produces work that seems magical and effortless. Dedicated actors will turn this craft into art, and that is the challenge we need to take on if we intend to train seriously.
